Oscar W. Unangst, 88, of White Township, NJ, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2015 at St. Luke's Warren Campus. Born on March 9, 1927 in Harmony Township, NJ, he was the son of the late Henry S. Unangst and Ethel Davis Unangst. Os was a lifetime dairy farmer. He started farming at the age of 17 when he purchased a parcel of land from his grandfather and farmed with a team of mules and five head of cattle. Over the years he had purchased several parcels in White Township connecting the land to what is known as the Unangst Farms on Pequest Drive with his loving wife Lorraine "Tootie" Stout. They raised five children, four boys, Kenny, Os Jr., Harry and Timmy and a daughter, Debbie. He currently farmed with his grandsons, Adam and Tyler Herb, milking 65 head, raising 30-40 heifers and farming over 300 acres. As an advocate for the farmer, Os had served on various agricultural boards and committees: NJ Holstein Association as a trustee; Warren County Holstein Association, an active member and past president since 1958; Warren County Board of Agriculture, served as Treasurer; a current director (over 45 years) for the WC Farmer's Fair, served as President for several terms; Board of Directors of the Farmers' Mutual Fire Assurance Association; Farmers' Home Administration ; Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Committee; volunteered for the 4-H Dairy Club for many years, passing on his knowledge. Os was a member of the Buttzville United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee. He was an over 50 year member of the Belvidere Rotary Club, having served as a past President. He had received the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award twice. Other awards he had been honored with include: Conservation Farmer of the Year, 1979; WC Board of Agriculture Distinguished Service, 1981; Rotary Club Farmer Recognition Award; WC Farmers' Fair Distinguished Exhibitor Award; NJ State Agriculture Citation for Distinguished Services, 2003; Chapel's Legion of Honor Award, 2010. Os had also served the people of his community for over 24 years on the White Township Committee, serving eight terms as Mayor. He was active with the Republican Club since 1973. He was always trying to maintain open space and preserve farmland from the overdevelopment. He helped acquire the land for the WTYAA playing fields on Route 519. Oscar was predeceased by three sons, Kenneth, Oscar Jr., and Timothy; a brother, Joseph; and a sister, Clara Ehasz. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine (Tootie) Stout Unangst; a daughter, Debbie Herb and her husband Jeff; a son, Harry; several grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, October 30. 2015 at the Buttzville United Methodist Church, 4 Green Pond Road, White Township. Interment will follow in the Buttzville Cemetery.
